This special recording, made in John Engels’ underground studio in 1996, is finally accessable on all streaming services. For years, it circulated as a cherished bootleg among musicians and jazz lovers.
This album is a true document of friendship and musical exploration between Jimmy, John, and Thomas. Although plans for future sessions never materialized, these timeless tracks remain a powerful testament to their shared artistry. now restored with remastering by Markus Nordlund.
All the compositions are rooted in classic standards from the Great American Songbook, including creative reinterpretations of tunes like Pennies from Heaven (in minor), Sweet Georgia Brown, Devil May Care, Indiana, That Old Feeling, and Ghost of a Chance. Their approach—expanding improvisational possibilities within established forms—is at the heart of their collective musical vision. And with John’s intense swing driving the rhythm, this recording offers a uniquely engaging listening experience.
Congratulations to John Engels, who turned 90 on May 13, 2025. Just two days before his birthday, he celebrated with a sold-out performance at the Bimhuis and was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Edison Award for his remarkable career.
